Katsuo Kuno, a prominent farmer in the Nukata District of the Aichi Prefecture near Nagoya, Japan, donated the 35 Shibata paintings to the University of California, Irvine in 1982. There are two stories explaining his donation. One is that Kuno was a patient at the UCI Medical Center and made the gift in appreciation of the treatment he received there.
